MEDIATION and the Adaptation Challenge: Identifying appropriate methods and tools to support climate change adaptation decision making.

The MEDIATION project guides researchers, policy advisors and experts to suitable climate change adaptation methods and tools for a wide range of questions and from various disciplines and perspectives. The project involves 11 partners and 11 case studies. Summaries of five of these case studies can be found in the present publication. Further information on the MEDIATION methodology, Adaptation Platform and training materials, which were developed for experts with basic technical or scientific knowledge rather than the general public,

Bridging the Gap between Climate Change and Development

The overall objective of this study is to explore synergies and trade-offs in mainstreaming responses to climate change within development planning and assistance, with natural resource management as an overarching theme. There is a particular emphasis on implications for development co-operation activities of OECD donors, as well as for national and regional planners in developing countries.

The Value of Coastal Wetlands for Hurricane Protection

The papers describes the interlinkage between damage costs by hurricanes in the US and loss of weatland.

Towards Climate Change Adaptation Strategies in the Baltic Sea Region: Developing Policies and Adaptation Strategies to Climate Change in the Baltic Sea Region

The following document is a result of the INTERREG IIIB project “ASTRA – Developing Policies and Adaptation Strategies to Climate Change in the Baltic Sea Region” that has been co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the INTERREG IIIB Baltic Sea Programme. The present document sums up the main findings of the ASTRA project. The document integrates the different outputs of the ASTRA project and presents information and recommendations for policymakers and interested stakeholders on adaptation strategies against climate change impacts.

Restoration of Mangrove Habitat

The note is providing general guideline on restoration of mangrove habitat.

Flood and Coastal Defence Project Appraisal Guidance. Overview (including general guidance).

This is one of a series of guidance documents designed to provide advice on best practice for the appraisal of flood and coastal defence projects. The content of this Overview is largely new and compiled internally by MAFF but extensively revised as a result of a consultation carried out in autumn 2000.

A Practical Framework for Planning Pro-Development Climate Policy

MCA4climate is a major new UNEP initiative providing practical assistance to governments in preparing their climate change mitigation and adaptation plans and strategies. It aims to help governments, particularly in developing countries, identify policies and measures that are low cost, environmentally effective and consistent with national development goals. It does this by providing a structured approach to assessing and prioritizing climate-policy options, while taking into consideration associated social, economic, environmental and institutional costs and benefits.

Adapting to the Impacts of Climate Change

This report provides examples of the range of options currently available for adapting to climate variability and extremes in key climate-sensitive sectors, such as agriculture, energy, and transportation. Although these examples alone may not be sufficient for coping with future climate change, they offer a starting point for devising adaptation strategies. While the report provides a long list of options to be considered for various sectors.

The Role of Environmental Management and eco-engineering in Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation

This report by ProAct Network and Gaia Group reviews a growing body of evidence that sound environmental management has a potentially important role to play in reducing many of the risks posed by natural hazards. Many ecosystems – if they are intact and/or well managed – act as natural, dynamic barriers that absorb the force of certain hazards, protect vulnerable communities and their assets while at the same time preserve local biodiversity and encourage ecological productivity. Natural ecosystems thus play an important protective and productive role in many instances.

Copenhagen climate adaptation plan.

With this climate adaptation plan we will outline the challenges the city faces in the short and medium terms as a result of changes we expect in the future climate. We will also identify those solutions that, based on our present-day knowledge, appear to be most appropriate and reveal the opportunities climate change may also present to the city.
