To show the progress in Europe on adaptation to climate change and to showcase inspirational and daring adaptation projects ERANET CIRCLE-2 works on a bold and visual inspiration book with good practices of implementation of adaptation strategies and projects in Europe. While most people may have a rough comprehension of climate change, the phrase adaptation often invites only raised eyebrows. What is adaptation? How do you define it and what does it look like?

Copenhagen Climate Adaptation Plan

With this climate adaptation plan we will outline the challenges the city faces in the short and medium terms as a result of changes we expect in the future climate. We will also identify those solutions that, based on our present-day knowledge, appear to be most appropriate and reveal the opportunities climate change may also present to the city. We do not yet know all the consequences climate change will have for Copenhagen, but we will continuously implement the measures required for Copenhagen to continue to be a safe and attractive city to live and spend time in.

It provides an assessment of the investment and financial flows that will be necessary in 2030 to meet worldwide requirements for mitigating and adapting to climate change under different scenarios of social and economic development, especially as they impact the well-being of developing countries

Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation: Quantify the Cost of Impacts and Adaptation

The aim of this project is to advance knowledge of the costs of climate change in the UK, by generating initial estimates of the welfare effects associated with specific impacts occurring under a range of climate change and socioeconomic scenarios for the UK. To the extent possible, it also indicates how and where the burden of these welfare affects may fall. In order to generate robust results, that will facilicate adaptation assessment, a primarily bottom-up approach based on local, regional and national case studies in a range of key impact sectors is adopted.

A Dynamic General Equilibrium Analysis of Adaptation to Climate Change in Ethiopia.

This study links a multisectoral, regionalized, dynamic, computable general equilibrium (CGE) model of Ethiopia with a system country-specific hydrology, crop, road, and hydropower engineering models to simulate the economic impacts of climate change scenarios from global circulation models (GCMs) to 2050. In the absence of externally funded, policy-driven adaptation investments, Ethiopia’s GDP in 2050 will be up to 10% below the counterfactual no climate change (historical climate) baseline.

This study has the overall objective to make proposals for action for the implementation of the National Adaptation Strategy of the German federal government addressing finance and incentive structures. On that account, the current state of research on the economics of climate change and the adaptation to it is assessed, an overview on specific policy measures is given, and possible evaluation criteria of these instruments are created. By means of a illustrative multi-criterion analysis, specific instruments are evaluated.

Coping with uncertainty in the inland navigation market: the impact of climate change.

In this paper a model is developed to study an inland waterway market’s production uncertainty due to fluctuating water-levels. Aspects that are studied are climate change and adaptation strategies against climate change. As an example of private adaptation the optimal barge-size, and as an example of public adaptation the optimal amount to investment in infrastructure are derived. We find that the trend to increase barge sizes in the Western European market is theoretically justified.

Adaptation measures in the EU : policies, costs, and economic assessment : climate proofing of key EU policies

The aim of this report was to identify the most appropriate measures on the EU level to address different threats. A final selection of measures to be assessed with a view to their costs and economic, social and environmental impacts was agreed at the first interim meeting with the Commission. Measures already part of EU wide assessment projects were no part of the assessment.

Economics of Climate Change in East Asia

This study addresses the economics of climate change in selected countries in the East Asian region, focusing on the People’s Republic of China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and Mongolia. It explores the economics of climate change adaptation at a subnational scale (i.e., provinces or regions), incorporates more climate scenarios, and examines climate uncertainty in more depth than previous work. Moreover, this study explicitly combines the costs of adaptation and mitigation into a single framework, while exploring linkages with the global economy.

Assessment of climate change adaptation costs for the U.S. road network

The U.S. road network is one of the nation’s most important capital assets and is vital to the functioning of the U.S. economy. Maintaining this asset involves approximately $134 billion of government funds annually from Federal, State, and local agencies. Climate change may represent a risk or an opportunity to this network, as changes in climate stress will affect the resources necessary for both road maintenance and construction projects.
